Reading & Eating

By February 17, 2015January 26th, 201623 Comments

Thanks so much for all the feedback on the new layout โ€” hopefully most of your concerns have been addressed by now, but please keep the requests (and compliments!) coming. Itโ€™s been so interesting hearing how you guys read this blog, ย you have no idea. Meanwhile, I was so consumed with the redesign that I forgot to run this round-up last week. So here you go, your Friday round-up on Tuesday:

Ever since I saw this shot above on instagram, itโ€™s been my go-to starter for dinner parties. Just add a baguette or gluten free crackers and youโ€™re set. (Photo credit @vickimorton)

Well, most of us canโ€™t be Danny Meyer, but now at least we knowย how to make a Shake Shack cheeseburger at home.

If you read nothing else this week, make sure itโ€™s Elizabeth Kolberโ€™sย โ€œA Stone for My Grandmother.โ€ย

We made Debโ€™sย pieย for Joanna and Alex a few weekends ago and it was just the thing to brighten up winter.

Homemade madelines
? Not as complicated as they look.

Currently obsessed with Black Mirror, BBCโ€™sย futuristic Twilight Zone-ish series about the dark side of technology. (Think โ€œHerโ€ times a thousand.)ย Warning: Not for the faint of heart.

Did someone say โ€œdark side of technology?โ€ย How one stupid tweet can ruin a personโ€™s life.

Theย 20 Most Instagrammed NYC Restaurant Dishes.

My comic-book nerd is loving Marvelโ€™sย Agent Carter.ย And I donโ€™t know how weโ€™d survive long snowed-in afternoons withoutย Gilmore Girlsย on Netflix.

Itโ€™s not all screen time in our house. My 12-year-old is still super intoย Muse Magazine, which I find is especially wonderful forย sciencey kids.

And I know Iโ€™m late to the party on this, but I canโ€™t remember the last time I was so into aย novel. (Remember the new Good Reads section of this blog will track all book news in our house.)

Lastly, fun news: Blue Apron, the dinner delivery service is offering DALS ย readers two free meals off of their first order.ย Click here to get started.ย Thanks Blue Apron!

Working on the Blue Apron linkโ€”not sure why itโ€™s not working for some of you. Stay tuned and sorry!

  • Avatar Erin says:

So excited about the Blue Apron coupon. I have been wanting to try it. I just clicked on your link and this is the message I get: This coupon is not redeemable. If you believe this is in error, please contact us at contact@blueapron.com. Is there another trick?

  • Avatar Annette says:

Unfortunately, the link for the Elizabeth Kolbert article does not work โ€“ but you can find her article โ€œThe last trialโ€ on newyorker.com or in the Feb 16 issue.

  • Sarah says:

So excited about the Blue Apron coupon! I will keep checking back to see if it is fixed ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh man, isnโ€™t BLACK MIRROR amazing??? I havenโ€™t been able to get past episode #3 yetโ€ฆ

  • Jenny Jenny says:

OK, Blue Apron link should now be fixed (with some minor tweaks). Sorry for the trouble everyone โ€“ I was not near a computer all day so couldnโ€™t address! Enjoy!

Are you familiar with the Pollan Family Table cookbook (http://www.amazon.com/dp/1476746370/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=61710824484&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16459834133508310635&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_21zlfitv9s_e)? There is a super easy, almost healthy, key lime pie recipe that Iโ€™ve made at least twice since New Years.

โ€œAll the Light We Cannot Seeโ€ is just beautiful! Dreaming of St. Malo nowโ€ฆ.

  • A Life From Scratch says:

I canโ€™t get past the prosciutto de parma and burrataโ€ฆโ€ฆ..would it be weird to make for breakfast now? ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Avatar Tiffany says:

With the new layout, I canโ€™t seem to pin your postsโ€ฆ am I missing something obvious?

  • Avatar ChiO says:

Simple and lovely! Easy dinners are the best!

  • Avatar SwithanF says:

I cannot even tell you how much I love that book. I made my mother and sister read it and we are all obsessed. I am thinking of writing the author and asking him to write a prequel about her father. Even if I am the only one who wants it!

  • Avatar Rustedrecipebox says:

    Love the new layout!

  • The Healthy Apple says:

LOVE Your new layout!! Looks fabulous darling. Hope you are great; miss you and hope to see you in NYC soon! oxxxx

  • Mila says:

โ€œAll the Light We Cannot Seeโ€ has been in my queue for some time, I am going to start it once I am done with my current book, canโ€™t wait!
Muse magazine sounds like a nice option for a birthday gift for my kids. And key lime pie? Love!

  • Avatar Lauren says:

I like the new layout! I also like that the content has the same catching up with a friend and talking about food and life vibe that I love about DALS.
I might try Blue Apron. Iโ€™ve been curious about it and it might be fun to break away from the old standbys Iโ€™ve been making lately

  • Avatar Carrie says:

I think I leave the same comment every time, BUT your lists are always the best! Read just about all of them and saving โ€œA Stone for My Great-Grandmotherโ€ for later this weekโ€ฆ Also, the โ€œ20 Most Instagrammed NYC Restaurant Dishesโ€ has inspired me to plan a trip to NYC soon (once it warms up, of course!) and has also made me very hungry.

  • Avatar Jane says:

Regarding the article A Stone for my Great Grandmother, always keep in mind there will be one more judgement seat that everyone will have to stand before and all that took part in this atrocity will be held accountable.

  • Avatar JR says:

I LOVE YOU! I enjoyed Shake Shack for the first time during this yearโ€™s snowpocalpse at JFK. We donโ€™t have one in my state (the nearest one is a solid 5 hours away, in a city that Iโ€™ve spent a grand total of 3 days in).

  • Avatar Nicolas - Sugar'n'Salรฉ says:
